Scott Higgs

Originally from Fairmont WV, I have lived in several places including Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Seattle, and various parts of North Carolina. I live now in Morgantown WV.

I consider myself an artist and teacher. As a statement of purpose, it is important here, to unpack the term 'artist,' as there are many interpretations and definitions both individually and societally.

For me, the work of the artist is simply, to observe and report. Artists of any era are responsible for reflecting the spirit of the time, the zeitgeist, principally for their peers and, with skill and craft, for the descandants of those peers.

I am a member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) and the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) and have worked as an actor on stage, television, and film as well as commercials, industrial films and voice overs.

For over twenty years I worked regionally in the Atlanta market (Tennessee, Florida, North and South Carolina). During that period I was a founding member of two theater companies with recurring role on a television series filmed in Georgia.

I also worked several years in the legal-tech industry as an operations and project manager during the intial phases of the analog (paper) to digital (electronic) documents transition.

I am a non-trational student and academic and began my undergrad work in Georgia in 2005 I recieved an A.A. in History, a B.A. in Public and Political Communication and an M.F.A. in Digital Media/Directing from the Film & Theater Studies Dept. at the University of Georgia in 2012.

I returned home to help care for my parents in time to be present for my father’s passing last June. I had no idea what I would find there or what lessons were to be learned; I did know that it was the right place to be.

I was intrigued by the Digital Literacy program at Fairmont State University as a course of study that complemented my academic and life experience. I have always been experientially curious and wanted to reflect that in my academic work and achievements.

The success I achieved while working in the corporate sphere was largely the result of thinking, strategizing and executing with an artist’s brain, which allowed me personal permissions to exercise a range of imagination not naturally utilized in that world.

I am currently working as a temporary substitute teacher for the Monongalia County Board of Education. I should receive my M.Ed. from FSU in August of 2017. My goal is to find a position that will allow me to exercise my strengths as teacher, administrator, advisor and artist in a place with those needs.

My experience at the University of Georgia includes two years as a graduate research assistant with an interdisciplinary think-tank called I.C.E.  (Ideas for Creative Exploration: http://ideasforcreativeexploration.com/) and one year re-designing the theater department’s Interactive Performance Lab (IPL).

I believe that 21st century 4th thru 12th grade classrooms should be grounded in a curriculum that favors teaching students how to do research and how to learn while exciting the desire to learn; with these attributes strongly instilled, the opportunities open to students can be innumerable.
